About us

The Tasmania Police Pipe Band was raised in 1969 and wears the Fletcher of Dunans tartan in honour of the Police Commissioner at the time, Mr Phil Fletcher.

In 2019, the Pipe Band celebrated its 50th anniversary with a celebration and performance at Princes Wharf No 1.

The Pipe Band is now in its 56th year and has performed at many Tattoos and competitions throughout Australia and overseas, including six visits to the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo most recently in 2019, the Hong Kong Beating Retreat ceremony in 1996, the Rotorua Searchlight Tattoo in 2008, the Sydney Edinburgh Tattoo in early 2010, the Basel International Tattoo in Switzerland in 2011 and the 2014 Closing Ceremony of the Commonweath Games held in Glasgow.

Local functions include the Tasmania Police Graduation ceremonies, ANZAC Day services, Christmas parades, Government House open days, community tours of the state, and performances on visiting cruise ships.

Book us for your next event

The Pipe Band participates in a wide variety of community events/parades across the state and is available for hire for private events – depending on availability around official engagements.

The Pipe Band is also available to members of the community seeking single pipers or a ‘mini band’ for weddings and ceremonial occasions where pipe music or a band may be suitable.

Members welcome!

Membership of the Tasmania Police Pipe Band is voluntary and currently includes serving police officers, teachers, students, corporate executives and retired members of the community from across Tasmania.

The Pipe Band is always keen to welcome new members, so if you are over 14 years old and have some previous musical experience, we’d love to hear from you!

Supported by the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management, the Pipe Band does not charge membership fees.

Learn to play the bagpipes or drums

Are you interested in learning how to play the bagpipes, snare drum, tenor drum or bass drum?

The Pipe Band provides free lessons for anyone over the age of 12 who is keen to learn how to play.

While the tuition is free, you will need to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to practice and progress… and hopefully consider joining the Pipe Band as a member one day!
