Youths to face court over West Ulverstone fires

A 16 year old youth will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act for arson following a fire which destroyed the scoreboard at the West Ulverstone Recreation Ground in Amy Street on 11 May this year.

Detective Acting Inspector Alex Bonde said police had been following a specific line of enquiry and would like to thank the West Ulverstone community for their assistance in the matter.

“The scoreboard fire forms part of a larger investigation into fires being lit in the West Ulverstone area in recent times,” he said.

As part of the investigation, a 12-year-old youth will also be proceeded against for unlawfully setting fire to vegetation in West Ulverstone also in May this year.

“Deliberately setting fires is a reckless and dangerous act that puts lives at risk and causes considerable damage to property. It also places an unnecessary strain on our emergency services,” Detective Acting Inspector Bonde said.

“People who deliberately lights fires will be held accountable for their actions.”

“We understand the concern this has caused within the community and we urge people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.”
