Women charged after stealing spree

Two women have been charged with stealing after being found in a car loaded with stolen property.

A police officer on patrol in Rocherlea stopped the car on Wednesday night and found it loaded with easter eggs, over 50 items of clothing, meat and two vacuum cleaners totalling a combined value of over $1200.

The pair had allegedly driven to Deloraine then Devonport for the day and stole the property from eight separate stores during the shoplifting spree, targeting supermarkets, clothing outlets and variety stores.

A 40 year-old woman from Cressy has been charged with nine offences of stealing and also using an unregistered car.  A 34-year-old woman from Rocherlea has been charged with twelve offences of stealing committed in Launceston, Deloraine and Devonport.

Constable Christopher Rockliff of the Newnham Police Station said the incidents should serve as a reminder for businesses to be vigilant with store security, in particular with checking bags and monitoring self-serve checkouts.

The women were released on bail to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court in May.
