Woman rescued from Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair, National Park
Further to the media release yesterday with regard to the 27 year old Taiwanese woman injured at Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania Police would like to inform the media that the woman had now been rescued and taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment. Her ankle injury will require her admission to hospital at least overnight.
Ten State Emergency Service Search and Rescue Squad members, five Police Search and Rescue Squad Members and four helicopter crew were involved in the two day search and rescue operation. Weather conditions hampered efforts to fly the Westpac Police Rescue Helicopter into the area to perform the rescue until just before 1.00 pm today. The helicopter crew had several initial attempts to reach Pelion Hut before successfully landing at the hut and transporting the patient and the search party back to Cradle Mountain and then onward to Hobart.
Police would like to remind bushwalkers that areas such as the Central Highlands can be hazardous. Weather conditions can change rapidly and injuries can occur expectantly. It is recommended, especially if hiking alone, that bushwalkers take an emergency device such as a personal locator beacon or EPIRB or a Spot type device so emergency services can be notified immediately of the distress and know exactly where it is. Another safety precaution is to let someone know where you intend to walk and the time you are expected to return and a deadline to call emergency services if you fail to return at that time. These safety precautions will save lives.
