Warning on vehicle security
Police officers at Bellerive have urged residents to increase the security of their vehicles.
Just 10 days into the New Year, 11 cars have already been stolen and several more have been broken into.
Cars most at risk are Nissans (5), especially Pulsars, Ford Lasers and Subarus. These have been spread across several suburbs including Howrah, Bellerive, Warrane and Lindisfarne. In most cases cars are stolen from the street outside the owner’s house during the night.
“I think the car security message is starting to be heeded but as a community we still have a lot of work to do. It is pleasing to note that several of the cars that were illegally entered did not contain property so thieves left empty handed,” said Acting Inspector Jason Hutcheon.
The best defence against theft is still an immobiliser as evident by one of the cars, a Nissan Skyline that was entered but could not be started.
“Quite simply the inconvenience and financial loss suffered as a result of a stolen car is easily avoided with a low-cost immobiliser.”
Vehicle owners should also park older vehicles in the driveway, if possible with a later model vehicle parked behind it. Steering wheel locks are also recommended.
The common myth that thieves won’t target old cars is simply not true; older cars are at greater risk.
Tasmania Police urge the motoring public to make a New Year’s resolution not to be a victim of motor vehicle crime.
If you witness anyone suspicious, particularly at night around motor vehicles, you can call police on 131 444.
