Virus Telemarketers

Tasmania Police has received numerous complaints in recent times regarding virus telemarketers—that is, persons who, through unsolicited telephone calls, try to convince a consumer that their computer has a virus that can be removed for a fee. Typically callers request to gain remote access to an individual’s computer, and provide instructions on how to facilitate this.

Tasmania Police would like to remind people to never provide personal information, payments, or computer access to unsolicited callers, for any reason. Such information should only ever be provided to organisations and persons you know and trust.

If you believe your computer may be infected with a virus you should seek the assistance of a reputable computer repairer, if you are unable to resolve the issue yourself. Payments to unsolicited callers typically go off-shore, where there is little chance of recovery. Further, allowing remote access to your computer may also provide access to other private information you do not want to disclose.

It is recommended that persons receiving such calls simply hang up their telephone. Further information can be obtained from the SCAMwatch website at www.scamwatch.gov.au.
