Update – Grunwaldt Investigation
The investigation into the disappearance of German tourist Nancy Grunwaldt has returned to the Bicheno Waste Management Centre today.
Launceston Detectives are using heavy machinery to excavate a section of the Tip which was investigated in February. Police are searching for the bicycle which was being used by Miss Grunwaldt at the time she was last seen.
The search is in response to information provided previously by a local resident who believes they saw a bicycle dumped at the site which matched the description of Miss Grunwaldt’s.
“In the interests of ensuring the information is fully investigated, Police have determined to return to the tip to excavate to an even deeper level. The tip will be closed to the public for the duration of the two day excavation,” said Detective Inspector Scott Flude.
“We have spoken to Miss Grunwaldt’s mother to inform her of the development,” he said.
Nancy Grunwaldt was last seen on 12 March 1993 riding a pushbike in a southerly direction about 4 kilometres south of Scamander. She has not been seen since and a resulting coronial inquest has resulted in no clear answer to the reason for her disappearance, although foul play is suspected.
