An unaccompanied learner driver has been charged and immediately disqualified from driving following a high range alcohol reading in West Launceston last night.

Around 6.30pm Sunday night, police attended a minor two vehicle crash at the intersection of Margaret and Frederick Street, West Launceston.

One vehicle was stationary at the intersection when it was hit from behind by another vehicle. No-one was injured and only minor damage was caused to both vehicles.

Both drivers were breath tested at the scene. The driver of the rear vehicle, a 28-year-old male learner driver from West Launceston, was taken to the Launceston Police Station for a breath analysis recording. His reading of 0.278 was five times the legal limit for a full Tasmanian Drivers Licence.

The learner driver was unaccompanied at the time of the crash and was charged and bailed. He was immediately disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months.
