U-Turn graduation 39
Working on car engines, panel beating and spray painting may not seem like everyone’s ideal way to spend 10 weeks, but for the group of young people graduating from course 39 of U-Turn,it was a life changing opportunity.
Participation in U-Turn, a unique program aiming to divert ‘at-risk’ young people from becoming further involved in criminal activity by applying a restorative practice approach, has given this group new practical skills that they can take to future employment or study.
This group joins over 250 others who have benefitted from participation in the program since its inception in 2003.
The group has restored a Daihatsu Charade which will be presented to Ms Ebony Alexander who has been a victim of car theft not once but twice.
In restoring this vehicle the participants have learned practical skills in mechanical repairs, car body work and spray painting as well as life lessons about the impact of crime on victims.
Commander Tony Cerritelli congratulated course participants of U-Turn 39 for their commitment and dedication to the course and their positive focus on new beginnings.
“The outcomes from this program are significant for both the participants and the community,” Commander Cerritelli said.
“Participating individuals will graduate today with increased skills, levels of confidence and renewed commitment towards employment and/or further education.”
