U-Turn Graduation 37
Today’s graduates of U-Turn course 37 have exemplified the true value of restorative justice programs.
Reading about and discussing the experiences of a victim of motor vehicle theft, Course 37 participants were motivated to offer assistance. Liaising with their course tutors, police and the victim, participants put together a proposal including a loan vehicle and a restored vehicle to enable Mrs Kaylene Batchelor to get back on the road, as soon as practicable.
Mrs Batchelor lost her vehicle to theft and fire. Acknowledging the consequences of someone else’s actions and the difficulty of the situation the victim was left to deal with, Course 37 has worked collaboratively to ensure that Mrs Batchelor has a newly restored 1997 Hyundai Elantra to drive away today.
Throughout the duration of this ten week course, participants have been engaged in acquiring new skills in mechanical training, spray painting and car body work. The project also addresses life skills, personal development, literacy and numeracy tuition as well as road safety education.
“Participants will graduate today with increased levels of confidence and self belief and established levels of commitment towards personal goals, employment and/or education," said Assistant Commissioner Donna Adams.
“U-Turn is a unique opportunity for participants; I congratulate all of Course 37 for their dedication and commitment to this project and applaud all the staff who have made this possible.”
