At 10.40pm pm on Saturday 16/6/2018 Tasmania Police, Fire Service, SES and Ambulance Service attended a two vehicle crash on the Bass Highway, Hellyer, 300m west of the Hellyer township.
The crash involved a Toyota Corolla sedan, driven by a 24 year old Smithton man who was travelling west, and a Toyota Commuter light bus, driven by a 34 year old North Motton man travelling east. Both vehicles sustained significant damage resulting in both drivers suffering leg injuries and needing to be cut free of the wreckage by State Emergency Service crews.
In addition, a 41 year old North Motton woman was cut free from the Toyota Commuter bus but suffered no serious injuries. A 39 year old North Motton man and six children, also passengers on the Toyota Commuter escaped without serious injury. All occupants were transported to the North West Regional Hospital.
Traffic was disrupted for over three hours, with the Bass Highway remaining closed at Hellyer until 2am 17/6/2018 whilst emergency crews freed the drivers and examined and cleared the scene.
Both drivers are listed as being in a stable condition. Early investigations indicate that driver fatigue may have been a contributing factor to one of the vehicles crossing onto the incorrect side of the road.
Tasmania Police would like to thank motorists for their patience with regards to the delays experienced.
