Two unrelated deaths at Cradle Mountain
Yesterday, Thursday 20th February 2014, police were called to assist with two separate medical emergencies in the Cradle Mountain National Park.
The first call for assistance occurred earlier in the day. A 68 year old man from NSW appeared to have suffered a fatal heart condition at the Marion’s Lookout area.
The second call came in later the same evening, when a 21 year old Chinese man died on the northern end of the Overland Track known as the cirque. Initial investigations suggest that he may have suffered from hypothermia. He was part of a group of walkers. Early indications are that this group were not sufficiently equipped to undertake the multi-day hike.
“Anyone considering walking in the Tasmania wilderness is encouraged to conduct research and prepare adequately as weather conditions in these areas can change very quickly,” Inspector Steven said.
Both deceased were recovered utilising the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and ground Search and Rescue parties.
