Police are investigating two more reports of contaminated fruit sold in Woolworths stores in the Hobart area.

Tasmania Police received a report of a metal object being found in a strawberry at Kingston about 6pm last night.

The 250g punnet of “Pinata” strawberries had been bought from the Kingston Town Woolworths, Kingston Town Shopping Centre on Sunday 16 September.

The report was made after the metal object measuring approximately 2cm long was found in a strawberry being eaten by a 2 year old child. No one was injured.

“We can’t confirm at this stage that the alleged contamination is linked to the Queensland incident but there is no evidence to suggest it is a hoax,” Detective Acting Inspector David Richardson said.

Police also received a report of a small metal object being found in an apple at Shoreline Woolworths this morning. Police were notified after the apple was cut up ready for a pet to eat.

“Police have been advised that the apple was locally produced and is therefore not believed to be linked to the Queensland incident.”

This follows the initial report involving a needle found in a strawberry bought from Woolworths Rosny on Sunday.

Police are conducting forensic examinations in all three cases, with results being expected in the coming days.

“We are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

“All relevant information is being collated in each state and provided to Queensland authorities to assist with their ongoing investigation.”

Police wish to urge members of the public to be attentive when consuming food products, such as fresh strawberries, and to report the matter to police if they believe they have purchased products that have been potentially contaminated.
