Two charged over series of crimes in Southern Tasmania

Two people have been charged over a series of crimes in Southern Tasmania, including stealing two government motor vehicles.

Last night police arrested a 46 year old man from West Moonah who was seen driving a stolen government motor vehicle in a dangerous manner in the greater Hobart area earlier yesterday.

Police today also arrested a 45 year old woman from Lenah Valley who was seen driving a different stolen government motor vehicle earlier today.  In both cases the drivers failed to stop at the direction of police.  In the second incident a female police officer was knocked to the ground but did not sustain any serious injury.

Both vehicles were safely intercepted and the man and woman were arrested without incident.

Police have now charged the 46 year old man with a series of offences including: Stealing x 7, Burglary x 5, Motor vehicle stealing x 2, Attempted motor vehicle stealing x1, Evading Police (Aggravating Circumstances) x 3, Drive whilst Suspended x3 and Computer Related Fraud x10.

Police have now charged the 45 year old woman with a series of offences including: Dangerous Driving, Evading Police (Aggravating Circumstances), Attempted motor vehicle stealing, Motor vehicle stealing, Receiving stolen property, Unlawful possession of property, Aggravated Assault, Computer Related Fraud and Driving whilst disqualified.

The man and the woman have both been detained in custody and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court from 10:00 am on Friday 4 January 2019.

Police will allege that the parties are known to each other and that while they were arrested separately, they were acting together for a number of the offences.

“These charges are the result of Detectives and Uniform Police working together to target offenders and their activities.  The investigation has been greatly assisted by members of the community who have provided specific information and dash cam footage.  I would like to thank the community for their very valuable assistance,” Detective Acting Inspector Jim Semmens said.

While the offenders have now been charged, investigators would still like to hear from anyone who saw the driving behaviour of either of the two vehicles in the greater Hobart area on Wednesday and Thursday.

Members of the community can upload any dash cam footage via the Axon Community tool with the link available on the Tasmania Police Facebook Page.
