Train and car collision

Approximately 1.30pm on Tuesday the 5 April 2011 a north bound train collided with a yellow Volvo station wagon on the level crossing on Sunderland Street, at Moonah.

The Volvo had been travelling in a westerly direction and failed to obey the red flashing lights and audible warning siren at the crossing.  The front passenger corner of the Volvo collided with the front of the train.  The force of the impact caused the Volvo to rotate clockwise and then the front of the vehicle struck an Aurora pole.

The 75 year old male driver of the Volvo and his passenger (a male in his 20’s) both from Moonah were conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital for observation.

The train driver, a 46 year old male from Glenorchy, was not injured.

Motorists are reminded that care and caution should be exercised when approaching level crossings.  All warning lights and alarms should be complied with.
