Top police award for 30 minutes of life-saving CPR

A police officer who saved a woman’s life by spending 30 minutes performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) will today receive a Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation.

The certificate will be presented at the Tasmania Police Academy at Rokeby at 2pm today.

Sergeant Kate Chambers was off duty when she was alerted to a player having collapsed on the soccer grounds at KGV Park in Glenorchy on 12 May last year.

The collapsed woman, aged 55, was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

Sgt Chambers commenced CPR and an ambulance arrived some 10 minutes later.

While paramedics administered to the woman Sgt Chambers continued CPR for another 20 minutes.

She was then taken to hospital and made a full recovery.

Commissioner Darren Hine said:

“Sgt Chambers was off duty but did not hesitate to respond when needed.

“She continued with CPR for an extended time, which is a very difficult thing to do.

“I’m very pleased to be able to formally thank her for her exceptional efforts that day.”

Sergeant Chambers receives her award for:

Commitment, professionalism and humanity displayed whilst off duty and responding to a person suffering cardiac arrest at Glenorchy on 12 May, 2013, by applying CPR for an extended period which resulted in the saving of a life.
