Three men charged over 4WD thefts

Three people have been charged with a series of offences following a four month police investigation into at least 70 4WD thefts across the state.

 

Det Sgt Michael Callinan said that a team of detectives from Hobart, Glenorchy and Bellerive Divisions conducted investigations over some months to dismantle the alleged theft ring, where vehicles were allegedly stolen, transported to remote locations including bush blocks, Crown Land and forest plantation sites where they were stripped down for sale.

“Operation Blackwater started in May 2017 following a noticeable increase in the number of 4WD, light truck and Holden HSV speciality vehicles being stolen and not recovered,” Det Sgt Callinan said.

“Initial investigations centred upon offences committed across the Southern District, however as the Operation progressed, it became apparent that the suspects were travelling state-wide committing offences.”

As a result of the four month investigation Detectives recovered around 30 stolen motor vehicles or parts.

A 19 year old Elderslie man has been charged with 24 counts of stealing, 8 counts of burglary, attempted stealing, aggravated burglary and possessing a firearm when not the holder of a licence of the appropriate category.

A 27 year old Collinsvale man has been charged with 12 counts of stealing, burglary, aggravated burglary, unlawful possession and hooning.

A 23 year old Bridgewater man has been charged with 4 counts of stealing, 2 counts of unlawful possession and burglary.

The men will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on 25 September at 10am.

Det Sgt Callinan said that the investigation was ongoing and urged people to report any suspicious behaviour.
