Taxi Driver Charged
Detectives from Hobart CIB today charged a man with two counts of assault with indecent intent.
Police allege the man assaulted an 18 year old woman who was a passenger in a taxi he was driving in the Hobart CBD in the early hours of the morning on 7 July 2013.
On another occasion, police allege the driver assaulted a 22 year old woman in Lenah Valley in the early hours of the morning on 17 August 2013.
The women are not known to each other.
“After a thorough investigation by Detectives, a 37 year old man was charged and bailed to appear at a later date. Conditions were imposed on the driver not to drive a taxi,” said Acting Detective Inspector Craig Joel.
“People who are out enjoying themselves, particularly where alcohol is consumed, are always reminded to be aware of their surroundings and let friends and relatives know where they are going and when they expect to be home,” he said.
“Using public transport is still one of the preferred options for getting home after nights where alcohol is consumed however there are some safety tips to consider if you are travelling alone.”
“It is recommended that anyone travelling alone, sits in the back seat and at the start of the journey clearly say where you'd like to go and your preferred route. If your friends have used certain services before ask for recommendations and give consideration to pre-booking,” he said.
