Tasmanian Officers return from New Zealand

A group of 11 Tasmania Police officers has returned to the state today after a two week deployment to Christchurch in the aftermath of last month’s earthquake.

After a request from the New Zealand Police Force, the six Constables, four Sergeants and an Inspector from each Police district, were selected from the many Tasmanian officers who volunteered for deployment.

They were sworn-in as members of the New Zealand Police Force on their arrival in order to carry out general policing duties in Christchurch.

The officers’ main tasks involved working with local officers to visit affected areas and provide reassurance to the people of Christchurch by checking on their welfare.

Officers visited homes, shopping areas, schools and other public places, and also patrolled the “red zone” in Christchurch.  Their aim was to help restore and build community confidence and assist with the recovery process.
