Tasmania to host Blue Ribbon Cup to honour fallen police officers

Tasmania will host the annual Blue Ribbon Cup match between St Kilda and Hawthorn for the second time in history this week.

The 16th annual match will be played at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium at 2pm on Saturday 16 April.

The annual Blue Ribbon Cup has a special significance as it is a chance to remember police officers who have been killed in the line of duty, including the 30 police officers who since 1817 have died while on duty or died as a result of injuries sustained on duty.

The Cup is played in memory of two Victorian police officers, Senior Constable Rodney Miller and Sergeant Garry Silk, who were killed in the line of duty at Moorabbin in 1998.

The Commissioner of Tasmania Police, Darren Hine, and Victorian Deputy Commissioner, Wendy Steendham, will present the silver Blue Ribbon medals to the players after the match.

James Miller, the 18-year-old son of Senior Constable Rodney Miller, will present the Blue Ribbon Cup. He was only 7 weeks old when his father was killed.

The Tasmania Police Charity Trust will be present at the game, and will organise a guard of honour for the players.
