Tasmania Police donate meat to Devils

A rare feast is in store for Tasmanian Devils around Southern Tasmania today, as the proceeds of a foiled crime are distributed.

Ham, steaks and roasts are on the menu for Tasmanian Devils at Bonorong Wildlife Santuary and Centres affiliated with “The Devil Program” as they devour ‘evidence’ following the finalisation of an investigation.

“The meat, valued at $2,600, was stolen from various supermarkets around Hobart, it was seized as evidence and kept in cold storage,” said Detective Karina Lane.

The offender in this case was charged, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment (wholly suspended on conditions).

“Upon conclusion of the case I didn’t want to see all that meat destroyed and asked that the Magistrate direct that it be released to a good cause,” she said.

“It is great to have agencies working together, turning a set of adverse circumstances into a positive measure towards protecting this unique species,” said Senior Keeper, Jocelyn Hockley from The Devil Program.

The court ordered disposal was granted. Today proceeds of this particular crime will be wholly enjoyed and wolfed down.

“It feels appropriate that we are able to recycle this meat, to participants in our own rehabilitation program, said Sanctuary Manager Petra Harris

“Some of the Devil “residents” at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary have come into our centre orphaned or injured.  Donations assist us to ensure they are happy and healthy in our care,” she said.
