Student robberies
Hobart Criminal Investigation Branch has been investigating two robberies committed upon University of Tasmania students.
The first was committed about 8.45pm on Wednesday 18 May and occurred on the corner of Regent and Alexander Streets Sandy Bay. In this incident two men have approached a male student and punched him a number of times to the face. This attack ended when the student surrendered his iPhone and the men fled on foot on Alexander Street travelling in the direction of Sandy Bay Road. As a result of this incident the student sustained a blood nose and a cut lip neither of which required medical treatment.
No description is available for these men, however, it is believed that they may be connected to a white vehicle, possibly a Holden Commodore which is fitted with a rear spoiler.
The second incident occurred about 12.20am on Saturday 21 May and occurred near the intersection of Regent and Lord Streets Sandy Bay. In this incident three men aged in their late teens to early 20’s have approached a male student from behind. The student has been forced to the ground where the men have attempted to remove a backpack which he was carrying. During the ensuing struggle one of the men have grabbed the student’s iPod from him and fled on foot on Lord Street in the direction of Parliament Street. As a result of this incident the student sustained grazes and a cut finger neither of which required medical treatment.
The men in this instance are described as:
- aged between 18 and 20 years
- approximately 180cm tall
- one man was wearing a white hoodie and possibly had blonde hair
- one man was wearing a black baseball cap.
A similar vehicle may also be related to this incident.
