Structure Fire – Grant Street, Smithton

At approx. 4.30pm on 7 July 2015, Tasmania Police and Tasmania Fire Service attended a structure fire at 7 Grant Street, Smithton. The dwelling was fully engulfed by flames on arrival and was brought under control by fire crews.

The dwelling had been vacant for some time and the fire was determined to be suspicious.

On 8 July 2015, Detectives from Burnie CIB interviewed two male youths aged 12 and 13 in relation to the fire.

As a result of investigations, the 12-year-old youth will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Youth Justice system in relation to the fire. The 13-year-old youth will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Youth Justice system for Aggravated Burglary and Stealing.

No persons were injured. The estimated cost of the fire is $90,000.
