Structure Fire – 30 Goya Road Newnham
Tasmania Fire Service were alerted to a structure fire at 30 Goya Road in Newnham at 1:20am this morning (23/03/2014).
Upon arrival the front of the house was fully engulfed with the fire quickly spreading to the rest of the house through the ceiling cavity.
The owner, a 55 year old male, was the only occupant at the time, escaped without any injuries. He was awoken by the smoke alarm in the hallway.
Two Tasmania Fire Service crews responded from Launceston and Rocherlea Stations and the fire was contained and extinguished quickly.
The fire is not suspicious, however the exact cause is still undetermined. It is believed that the fire has started in the loungeroom.
The occupant was treated by Ambulance Tasmania at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.
The damage to the premises is estimated at approximately $300,000.00.
This incident clearly shows that having a working smoke alarm installed and fitted correctly can save your life during a house fire.
