Structural Fire – Hamers Hotel, Strahan
At 4:35pm on Saturday the 7th June 2014, Police received a report that the historic Hamers Hotel was on fire with flames coming out of the roof.
Upon arrival, the roof of the administration area upstairs from the public bar was found to be well on fire.
Volunteer fire units from Strahan, Zeehan, Queenstown and Rosebery attended and were able to contain the fire and bring it under control. The roof and administration areas were severely damaged by the fire, but the remainder of the complex was able to be saved.
Damage is estimated to be around $300,000. After initial investigations, the fire is not considered to be suspicious.
Quote from Constable Wayne Bradford:
“I tip my hat to the professional response of the west coast volunteer firefighters. If it wasn’t for their fast response and effective actions, Strahan may have lost a significant part of its iconic streetscape. It’s a classic old building that presents a significant challenge to firefighters, they did a sterling job.”
Initial investigations indicate that the fire is not suspicious.
