Strahan Fatal Crash
At approximately 11.00pm Friday 3rd October 2014 a fatal single vehicle crash occurred in the township of Strahan.
Police believe a white Mitsubishi VRX Magna was being driven by a 20 year old Strahan man when he lost control of the vehicle on Innes Street.
The vehicle travelled across a grass nature strip area before driving into a drain. The vehicle then continued on for approximately 27 meters over the grassed area before plunging approximately 30 meters over an embankment and onto a vacant area opposite the public toilet block on the Esplanade.
There were three passengers in the vehicle, two teenage females from Burnie and a male also believed to be from the North West.
Police believe that once the vehicle had gone over the embankment and impacted the ground off the Esplanade, one of the females was thrown out and the vehicle has then landed on her. The female, aged 15 years died prior to medical assistance arriving.
The male passenger was airlifted from Strahan with internal injuries and was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital. The driver and other female passenger suffered minor injuries and were treated locally.
Crash Investigators and Forensic Officers from Burnie attended the scene with local police. Police would like to speak with anyone who heard or saw the Mitsubishi Magna prior to the crash to contact either the Strahan or Burnie Police Stations or the police assistance number 131 444.
Police have not released any names at this stage. The investigation is in it’s infancy and is ongoing. A report is also being prepared for the coroner.
