A 14 year old male student from Wynyard High School has been charged this afternoon with causing grievous bodily harm and will appear in an out of hours youth justice court this evening.

It's alleged the 14 year old stabbed a 16 year old male student at the school at about 10 o'clock this morning.

The student is undergoing surgery for a non life threatening wound to the stomach area.

"I urge students not to use social media to speculate on this matter.   Police are investigating the circumstances which led to this incident and spreading rumours on Facebook is not helpful,” said Inspector Kim Steven.

Police investigations are continuing and any witnesses or anyone with any information about the incident is urged to contact Burnie CIB or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
