Skateboarder injured after being hit by vehicle in Devonport
A 16 year old male youth was injured after being hit by a vehicle in Devonport this morning.
The youth was riding his skateboard east on the roadway of Oldaker Street Devonport and entered the intersection of Oldaker and William Street against a red traffic light about 7:55am today.
At this time a Ford Ranger 4WD, which was travelling south on William Street at low speed collided with the youth who was using headphones and no wearing a helmet.
The male driver of the 4WD immediately stopped and provided assistance to the youth until Ambulance Tasmania and Police arrived.
The youth was stabilised at the scene and conveyed to the North West Regional Hospital for further treatment. The youth is in a stable condition and is likely to be discharged today.
The driver of the 4WD was shaken by the collision but did not receive any physical injuries. The incident was comprehensively captured by CCTV in the area.
Tasmania Police would like to thank the members of the public that provided assistance to the driver and the injured youth before emergency services arrived.
“Tasmania Police take this opportunity to remind drivers to be vigilant when entering intersections, whether they are signed or controlled by traffic lights. Motorists should also be mindful of all pedestrians near or on roads, particularly children who are more likely to behave unpredictably,” Sergeant Hawkins said.
“Pedestrians who are using any wheeled device, including skateboards, on Tasmanian roads, should take care, obey all road rules and particularly in the case of children, should always wear an approved safety helmet.”
