Shooting incident in Launceston
Launceston Police are investigating two incidents overnight which involved stolen vehicles.
About 1.30 this morning police responded to the sound of shots being fired in South Launceston. As the officers neared the scene in Glen Dhu Street they came across two vehicles hooning. When they attempted to intercept one of the vehicles, shots were fired from within that vehicle. It has been established that the vehicle, a two door car, had been stolen earlier the previous evening from the Kings Meadows area.
Police did not pursue the vehicle and it was located a short time later dumped in Anne Street Launceston. The occupants had fled the scene. A firearm was located in the immediate vicinity and spent shells were located inside the car.
Later on in the morning police attempted to intercept a speeding vehicle, a Suburu, in Launceston and later on the West Tamar Highway near Legana. The speeding car has turned into Sunrise Drive off the highway and the police vehicle has followed. The offending vehicle stopped and then reversed at speed ramming the police vehicle. The driver and passenger have then run off into bushland.
Fortunately no-one was injured in either of the incidents. Uniform Officers and Detectives are investigating the two incidents.
Police are seeking assistance from any member of the public who may have any information about these incidents to contact Launceston Police on 03 6336 3701, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
