Shooting incident Elwick Road

Police and ambulance officers attended a shooting outside a private house in Elwick Road, Glenorchy, at 7.00 pm last night, Wednesday 25 April 2012.

A 17 year old youth was shot in the upper body and taken to hospital for treatment.  His injury is not life threatening.  He is still undergoing treatment.

The offender is alleged to have fired the shot from a vehicle after a dispute outside the house.

Detective Acting Inspector Craig Joel of Glenorchy CIB said “Uniform police and Glenorchy CIB Detectives attended at the house with forensic police and expert ballistic staff.  Examinations were conducted to try and identity the alleged offender, and the type of firearm used by the offender.”

“Police would like to speak to the driver of a white van with a black strip around the side.  The van was a model that has a pronounced bonnet rather than a flat front.  The back doors of the van may have been open when the van was in transit,” said  Detective Acting Inspector Joel.

“History and reflection following shooting incidents in this State, and more recently on the mainland, shows us that intimidatory displays of force like this are typical of parties who are known to each other, and I would reiterate that all the indications are that this is not a random attack,” he said.

“Police are treating the shooting seriously, however have no reason to believe that anyone outside of these immediate parties is in any danger,” said Detective Acting Inspector Joel.

All residents in Glenorchy and surrounding suburbs are encouraged to go about their normal business while police conduct their investigation.

Detective Acting Inspector Joel encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.  Information can be given anonymously and there is provision for a reward.
