The Bureau of Meteorology advised that strong and cold west to south-westerly winds are expected to persist over Tasmania today and tomorrow.  Snow and ice can be expected in elevated areas; creating potentially hazardous road conditions.

A severe weather warning is in place specific to strong and damaging winds of around 70km/h with peak gusts up to 120km/h across most parts of the State; and this is expected to be extended to a state-wide warning from late this evening. These winds may have significant impacts with falling trees; particularly in light of the ground saturation level.

A moderate flood warning is also in place for the upper sections of the South Esk River with minor flooding warnings in lower areas.   Strong and dangerous flows will continue in all north and north-east catchments over the next few days; and localised inundation may be present in low-lying agricultural areas and secondary road systems. Vigilance is strongly recommended.

Noting the potential weather effects above, the SES advises people to -;

• Beware of damaged trees and power lines, due to the saturated ground, trees may fall under these conditions
• Beware of dangerous road conditions due to ice, trees and debris on roads and drive to the conditions
• Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment (i.e. trampolines are a frequent issue in high winds)
• Do not drive, walk, swim or cycle through flood waters
• People clearing debris near rivers should take precautions due to rapid water level rises and possibility of shifting debris
• Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
• Manage pets and livestock
• Be prepared in case of power outages
• Ensure drains and gutters are clear of debris and are running freely
• Disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility
