Setting the Record Straight

It’s disappointing that a media report has today made erroneous assertions about access to details of firearms owners, despite being in possession of the facts.

The personal details of firearms owners maintained by Tasmania Police cannot be accessed by members of the public.

There is no requirement to complete a ‘sign in’ register at police stations in order to renew or apply for firearms licences. A ‘consolidated counter register’ referred to in the report does not exist.

The public can be reassured the Firearms Database software is secure and can only be accessed by authorised employees, and it is subject to audit.
Last financial year there were 63 firearm theft incidents, a decrease from 76 the previous year.

It is a concern that the incorrect information contained in the media report may cause community concern about access to personal information of firearms owners, when there is no basis to the claims.
