Serious Vehicle/Pedestrian Crash – Valley Road, Devonport

At 1614 hrs on Tuesday the 14th of October 2014 Police were called to a motor vehicle and pedestrian crash on Valley Road at Devonport.

The crash occurred when an 18 year old East Devonport woman walked out onto the road between two vehicles parked near the Valley Road Doctors Surgery and into the path of an oncoming Toyota Hilux utility being driven west on Valley Road by a 55 year old Devonport woman.

The passenger side mirror of the Toyota clipped the 18 year old woman causing her to be thrown into the air and to land on the road. As a result of the crash she sustained serious head injuries and was taken by ambulance to the North West Regional Hospital at Burnie in a critical condition. She is to be transferred to the Neurosurgical Unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital when she has been stabilised.

The 55 year old Devonport woman was conveyed to the Mersey Community Hospital where she was treated for shock.

Traffic was diverted around the crash scene at Valley Road for approximately 2 hours to enable investigations to be undertaken by Western District Crash Investigation and Forensic Services.

The crash scene was attended by Tasmanian Ambulance Service and Police from Devonport Uniform Section, Western District Road and Public Order Services, Western District Forensic Services and Western District Crash Investigation.

Investigations are ongoing however at this stage it appears that pedestrian inattention is the major contributing factor in the crash.
