Serious Single Vehicle Crash – East Coast, Mayfield
At 4.10pm on Tuesday, 2 November 2016, police and emergency services were called to a single vehicle crash on the Tasman Highway at Mayfield, approximately 1,7km’s south of the Mayfield Beach camping/conservation area.
The crash occurred when a silver Mercedes hatch travelling north and approaching a bend in the road, crossed onto the south-bound lane, left the roadway and collided with a tree.
The vehicle sustained considerable damage to the driver’s side guard and pillar area.
The 69 year old female driver, and only occupant, was trapped in the vehicle and sustained serious leg injuries.
She was treated at the scene by local volunteer Ambulance Tasmania officers and had to be cut free by local SES and Tasmania Fire Service volunteers, during which the highway was closed for a short period of time.
She was flown from the scene to the by the Westpac Rescue helicopter to the Royal Hobart Hospital.
The cause of the accident is not known.
