Serious single motorcycle crash

A 25 year old Launceston man is in a serious but stable condition following a motorcycle crash in Invermay this afternoon at 7:52 PM.

Police and emergency services were called to the Inveresk walking trail between Forster Street and Invermay Road where the male rider of an unregistered trail bike struck a bollard in the middle of the walking path whilst travelling at speed.

The rider was thrown from his motorcycle following the collision and received serious injuries to his left leg, requiring emergency surgery and further hospitalisation.

He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but no other protective clothing.  The motorcycle had no functioning lights and the rider did not possess a motorcycle license.

The path on which the motorcycle was being ridden is a popular walking trail that is not designed for the use of vehicles. There are warning signs at intervals along the path indicating that it is for pedestrian foot traffic only.

“The actions of this rider had the potential to cause serious injury to other people in the area considering the volume of pedestrian traffic this path receives.

This is a timely reminder to members of the public with unregistered, off road motorcycles, that they are not designed nor permitted to be ridden in public places,”said Acting Sergeant Stuart Greenwood, Launceston Police.
