Serious pedestrian crash, Southern Outlet – Kingston
At 9:50 PM on Sunday 4 December 2016, police attended a pedestrian crash on the Southern Outlet at Kingston. A 23 year old male from Kingston was reported to be walking northbound in the southbound lanes when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in a serious but stable condition.
The 86 year old driver of the Toyota sedan, also from Kingston, was not injured in the crash and submitted to mandatory blood testing.
Police had received reports of the pedestrian walking on the roadway immediately prior to the crash.
Due to recent crashes involving pedestrians, police would like to remind pedestrians to ensure they are safe and visible when near the roadway. Senior Constable KEYGAN of Kingston police asks that pedestrians take responsibility for their own safety. Where possible, avoid walking on the roadway and if unavoidable, ensure you wear light coloured clothing to increase visibility.
“The Southern Outlet is a generally unlit section of road with high speed zones, and there is little reason why a pedestrian should be walking along the roadway. Following the tragic death of a pedestrian on the Southern Outlet at Hobart less than a month ago, it highlights the dangers involved in doing so. With people going out more frequently as we approach the festive season, it’s a timely reminder for pedestrians to take charge of their safety.” he said.
Investigations into the incident are continuing. Any motorist who witnessed the incident or the pedestrian prior to the crash are asked to contact Kingston police on 13 1444.
