Serious pedestrian crash

At approximately 6.10pm today, 4/10/2010 a 71 year old Somerset man was critically injured by a vehicle when he was leaving a residence in Raglan Street, Somerset.

Police believe the man had been visiting friends and was leaving to walk to his nearby residence when a Holden Commodore which was being driven in a northerly direction on Raglan Street by a 28 year old Somerset female lost control in wet conditions.

The Holden travelled over the footpath and up a raised grass embankment before crashing through a metal fence and travelling over a small area of lawn. At this point, the elderly man had just walked onto the driveway when the vehicle landed on top of him.

The male was trapped underneath the vehicle for about 30 minutes before being extracted by rescue services. He was conveyed to the NWRH in a critical condition and will be transferred directly to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The driver was relatively un-injured as was her 30 year old male passenger. Both attended the NWRH.

Furthermore, the 82 year old female who owned the property on which the collision occurred suffered a heart attack as a result of the incident. Another ambulance was required to attend the scene and she was also conveyed to the NWRH and is in a stable condition.

Burnie Police, Forensics and Accident Investigation attended the scene along with Burnie and Somerset Fire brigades. Raglan Street was closed to traffic for about 2 hours while investigations were carried out and the vehicle was removed.

Police would like to hear from any persons who saw or heard the vehicle travelling on Raglan Street to contact Burnie Police on 64345211 or 131444.
