Serious crash at Boat Harbour
Approximately 4:30pm on Thursday 15th March 2012 a three vehicle collision occurred on the Bass Highway, Boat Harbour approximately one kilometre west of the Boat Harbour store.
A blue Suzuki hatch was being driven east on the Bass Highway by a 73 year old male from Rocky Cape when it has collided with a green Hino truck travelling east on the Bass Highway. The truck was being driven by a 46 year old Somerset man. The driver of the Suzuki hatch crossed onto the wrong side of the highway to avoid a collision with a third car.
The male driver of the hatch became trapped in the vehicle and emergency service personnel were required to free him. Both the driver and female passenger were transported to the North West Regional Hospital with injuries. The male driver suffered serious injuries and is a stable condition. The female passenger received minor injuries and was later discharged.
The driver and sole occupant of the Hino truck sustained only minor injuries and he was treated by medical staff at the accident scene.
The Bass Highway was closed for approximately four hours while investigations were carried out. Traffic was diverted through Myalla, Lapoinya and Flowerdale.
Police from Western District Traffic Services, Wynyard and Burnie Police, Forensic Services, Tasmanian Ambulance Service, Tasmanian Fire Services, SES personnel and Western Accident Investigation Services attended the scene.
At the time of the crash the road surface was wet and it was raining. Investigations are continuing to the cause of the collision.
