Serious bicycle crash on bikeway East Tamar Highway Mowbray
Around 8.45am on Wednesday 8 May 2013, a 60 year old man, from West Launceston, was riding his mountain bike north on the bicycle track that runs beside the East Tamar Highway, near the Mowbray Connector, Mowbray.
Another 19 year old man, from Mowbray, was riding his mountain bike in the opposite direction down hill onto the flat.
Both cyclists have approached a partly obsecured corner. They have collided and the 60 year old male was thrown to the ground striking his head. He was wearing an approved bicycle helmet.
The impact has causing the 60 year old male rider to receive an injuries to the head and spine. He was assisted by another cyclists and members of the public.
Ambulance Tasmania attended and the 60 year old rider was taken to Launceston General Hospital for treatment and suffered serious head and spinal injuries. He is in a serious conditon.
The 19 year old cyclist received a minor shoulder injury.
Police, Crash Investigation Services and Forensic Services attended scene. The bike track was closed for three hours for scene investigation and has now been reopened.
