Serious Assaults and Drug Trafficking

On Monday 17 February 2014 Launceston CIB and Drug Squad detectives searched a residence in Neika Avenue West Launceston and at the same time a residence in Robin Street Newstead in relation to drugs and a number of serious assaults.

Police were investigating a number of serious assaults inflicted on a St Leonards man by the occupants.

It will be alleged that on two separate occasions in February two men assaulted the St Leonards man.

It will also be alleged that during the search in West Launceston police located over 700 grams of methylamphetamine and over $32 000 in cash.

As a result a 34 year old man from West Launceston was charged with aggravated sexual assault x 2, aggravated assault, assault x 2, assaulting police and trafficking in a controlled substance.

A 25 year old man from Newstead was charged with aggravated sexual assault x 2, aggravated assault, assault x 2 and stealing.

Both men were remanded in custody to appear in the Launceston Court of Petty Sessions at 11.30am Tuesday 18 February 2014.

The victim of the assaults is undergoing treatment for his injuries and will require surgery.
