A 71 year old woman who was assaulted in New Town on Saturday 4 October, has died in the Royal Hobart Hospital as a result of her injuries.

Bellerive Detectives have been investigating the serious assault which took place on the corner of Argyle Street and New Town Road at 8.50am on Saturday 4 October 2014.

A 50 year old Moonah man is in custody and will appear later this year in the Hobart Supreme Court, charged with Causing Grievous Bodily Harm. The two were not known to each other.

Investigators will now consider a more serious charge.
