Series of serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes 7 – 8 February 2015
Over the past weekend there were four serious crashes that resulted in four fatalities.
Those crashes include:
(1) Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash on King Island on Saturday the 7 February 2015
At 10.20 pm on Saturday 7 February 2015 there was a single vehicle crash on the corner of East Wickham Road and Manana Road, Yambacoona, involving a White Mazda Utility. The male driver was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The driver was transported to the King Island District Hospital where he was treated by staff, however, later that night pronounced deceased.
(2) Fatal motorcycle crash at Bothwell on Sunday 8 February 2015
At 11.10am on Sunday 8 February 2015, a 57 year old Molesworth man has died as a result of a single vehicle motor cycle crash on Hollow Tree Road, Bothwell.
The crash occurred when a 2004 blue Kawasaki which was travelling toward Bothwell has left the roadway whilst the rider was negotiating a sweeping right hand bend. The rider appears to have died instantly as a result of the crash.
(3) Fatal motorcycle crash at Lilydale on Sunday 8 February 2015
At 3pm on Sunday 8 February 2015 a motorcycle travelling south on Lilydale Road, Lilydale was struck by a large round bale of hay that had fallen from a truck that was travelling north. The hay bale was still moving when it struck the motorcycle, having fallen from the truck as the two vehicles were passing.
The riders on the motorcycle were a married couple from Prospect and both died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
Police are asking that anyone who saw a white Western Star truck and trailer transporting large round bales of wrapped hay from Westbury towards Lilydale to contact the Crash Investigation Section in Launceston on 67773936.
(4) Serious motor vehicle crash at Tunbridge on Sunday 8 February 2015
At about 3:50pm Sunday 8 February 2015 there was a serious two vehicle crash on the Midland Highway, just north of Tunbridge.
A 2005 Hyundai Tuscon FF2464 with two people on board has collided with a 2010 Toyota Corolla with four people on board.
Two passengers were trapped in the cars and had to be cut out. All six people were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital – one by helicopter. Two have serious injuries but are in a stable condition. Emergency Services were at the scene for six hours.

“Police are asking that anyone who witnessed any of these crashes to contact police on 131444”.
“This is a tragic 24 hours on Tasmanian roads and there are families who are suffering as a result of these four separate events. It is most likely the worst day on our roads since nine people died in 2009”.
“As the long weekend in the south of the state draws to a close, we appeal to all motorists to drive carefully on their way home. Please take rest breaks, drive under the speed limit and within the conditions, and be vigilant of the behaviour of other road users.”
“If you see a motorist driving dangerously or recklessly and it is safe to do so, please obtain the registration and contact 131 444 and advise police immediately. This will give us the opportunity to stop the driver’s behaviour, before it becomes a tragic incident”.
