Security compliance checks carried out across Hobart venues

Authorities in Hobart joined forces last night, making sure security at local licensed venues was compliant with regulations.

Inspector John Toohey said 25 venues and 57 security guards were checked across Sandy Bay, Hobart and North Hobart. “Pleasingly, most establishments and staff were found to be in compliance, with 5 security guards cautioned for not having the correct identification.”

“We took an educational approach, chatting with owners and staff to remind them about what security agents should be doing.” “It was great to see that most places and people were doing the right things,” he said. “As police, we’re focused on keeping people safe and operations like this help us do that.”

Dave Tilley, Director of Compliance at Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) said the legislation (Security and Investigations Agents Act 2002) is in place to ensure security agents and crowd controllers are appropriately licensed and professional standards are upheld.

“Collaborative operations like this help make sure Hobart stays a place where everyone can have a good time, safely and responsibly,” he said. “The legislation is in place for everyone’s safety, and operations like this provide an opportunity to make sure everyone understands and follows the rules, which is particularly important at such a busy time of year for licensed premises.”

More operations are planned over the festive season.
