About 10:10am on Friday 27 May 2011 a 17 year old detainee from the Ashley Youth Detention Centre escaped from custody after receiving treatment at the Launceston General Hospital.

Police have conducted searches across the inner city, West Launceston and Trevallyn, as well as checking a number of private residences with links to the escapee.

The youth was dressed all in blue, with a black cap and was handcuffed to the front of his body.

He is described as being 165cm in height, of slim build with blue eyes and light brown hair.

Police are seeking information from members of the public who may have seen him or been approached by him for assistance.

While the youth does not present a direct risk to members of the community, police urge anyone who comes into contact with him to immediately contact police on 131 444.
