Search continues for missing men at sea

Police are this morning continuing their extensive air, sea and land search for two missing men in waters near Cremorne in Southern Tasmania.

It follows yesterday’s tragic discovery of the bodies of two men who were also on the fishing trip. The two bodies were located near Sloping Main about midday yesterday. The bodies are yet to be formally identified.

Inspector Lee Renshaw said that four men – a 33 year old, a 32 year old and a 26 year old, all from Hobart, and a 35 year old from New Zealand – were reported missing by a family member about 6.45pm on Sunday night when they failed to return from a fishing trip.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and five Police Vessels including Dauntless and Van Diemen, as well as volunteers from Surf Life Saving Tasmania, are continuing their extensive search of Frederick Henry Bay for the two remaining missing men. Foot searches were also conducted around beaches and cliffs in the area.

“Tasmania Police are grateful for the contribution from volunteer organisations and other community groups and businesses who have assisted in the search effort thus far,” Inspector Renshaw.

The men, who left on their fishing trip in a 16 foot fibreglass vessel about 7am on Sunday, were believed to have access to lifejackets but were not carrying an EPIRB.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner regarding the incident. Our thoughts are with the families involved.
