School zone road safety reminder

Motorists have been reminded of the need to drive appropriately within school zones, with more than 120 people recently issued with infringements.

During the past two weeks police have conducted high visibility and covert patrols in more than 200 school zones throughout the state. During this time:

  • 78 motorists have been detected exceeding the speed limit
  • 3 drivers have been apprehended driving without a licence
  • 19 motorists have been charged with illegal parking
  • 25 motorists have been charged with other offences including fail to wear a seat belt and use a mobile phone.

Tasmania Police will continue to conduct significant patrols of school zones and crossings.

“It is important for motorists to be extremely vigilant in school zones, and there is no excuse for speeding in areas where there is a 40 kilometre an hour limit,” said Inspector Mark Beech-Jones.

“Illegally parking cars around schools can make it difficult for motorists to see young children, whose behaviour can be unpredictable.  Police will continue their focus on inappropriate driving behaviour in these areas.”
