Road Safety In Adverse Weather Conditions

Police are urging Tasmanian drivers to take extra care with rain, sleet, snow and high winds impacting the State.

Tasmania Police always experience a large increase in phone calls from the public during severe weather events, with many of those calling to ask if a road is open or closed. Motorists are urged to check the Tasmania Police website Community Alerts and the TasALERT website  prior to leaving home if they think their route may be affected by snow, ice or flood waters. These websites both display all current road closures with the list being updated constantly. This is the best source of Road Closure information for motorists.

Sergeant Michael Glancy, from Radio Dispatch Services, said:

“If a road is closed, motorists should never drive around road closure signs, or move signs from the roadway. Roads are closed for the safety of the public and by ignoring these closures your actions can compromise the safety of yourself and other motorists. You may also negate your vehicle’s insurance policy by driving on closed roads.

“Give yourself plenty of time to drive to your destination, take care and be patient as road crews work to clear any effected roads as soon as possible”.
