Rescue – Schouten Island
At about midday on 23/4/2015 a 16m fishing boat started taking on water approx. 10nm east of Schouten Island in 200m of water.
The two man crew of the vessel tried to pump the water from the vessel but the pumps were unable to keep up with the intake of water.
As the boat rolled over and sank the two men managed to get into a life raft and set off an EPIRB.
The signal was received by AMSA and the location was passed on to Police.
The Westpac Police rescue helicopter, a police vessel and other fishing vessels in the area were tasked to the location.
The helicopter located the two men in their life raft approx. 10nm east of Schouten Island and they were both winched into the helicopter.
Neither suffered any injuries as a result of the incident.
