Rescue of Two Sailors – Cape Raoul (2 Jan)
At approximately 7:30pm on Thursday 2/1/14, Tasmania Police Search and Rescue were notified of two injured sailors. The sailors were both on board the yacht “Mission Performance” which was involved in the “Clipper around the World Yacht Race”. The yacht was bound for Brisbane after having departed Hobart at 5:00pm.
The sailors, a man from the United Kingdom and a woman from Sydney were injured when the yacht was hit by a strong wind gust off shore from Cape Raoul. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was activated along with the Police Vessel “Relentless”.
Both sailors were transferred from the yacht to PV “Relentless” and then taken to Nubeena. Tthey were both flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The male suffered head and suspected spinal injuries whilst the female suffered suspected broken ribs. Both are in a stable condition.
