Emergency services are reiterating the dangers of flood waters, after two teenagers had to be rescued in Campbell Town yesterday evening.

Tasmania Police, volunteer TFS and SES units and Ambulance Tasmania officers were called to the end of King Street about 7pm, arriving to find one teenager on the bank and two of her friends trapped in flood waters from the Elizabeth River.

The local SES volunteers procured a vessel from the township and lowered it into the river with the assistance of police.

The two girls were then brought into the boat and taken by ambulance to the Campbell Town hospital for observation.

Thankfully no one was injured in the incident.

Police would particularly like to thank the Campbell Town volunteers who attended, and helped to ensure a positive result.

Constable Madison Hickman from Campbell Town police said this was a good opportunity for Tasmanians to be reminded of the dangers of flood waters, particularly with current wet weather conditions and the possibility of further flooding.

“While flood waters may appear harmless at first glance, the risks associated with swimming in them are real and can have catastrophic consequences.”

“Road users must also take notice of the risks associated with these weather events, especially leading into the long weekend in Northern Tasmania.”

“Anyone who is in or travelling through flood affected areas needs to heed road closure signs, and give themselves plenty of time to take an alternate route in the event of flooded roads.”
